A Different Kind of War – Economic Sanctions

Killing the Children – The Case of Iraq
Hans von Sponeck, ” A different Kind of War”, former UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Iraq and Joy Gordon, “Invisible War”, of Fairfield University speak about their experience with and research of US and British policies that crippled the United Nation’s intent not to harm civilians as a result of enforcing economic sanctions against Iraq.

Each documents in their respective books the scale of suffering perpetrated against children and the civilian society. Joy Gordon speaks to the corruption and criminality that the sanctions create and the opposite effect than intended of strengthening the power of the targeted government. Hans von Sponeck gives some history of “smart sanctions “, why they evolved, and how counter to UN intent they were manipulated by the US administration with a ruthlessness that blocked importation of the most fundamental food stuffs and medicines. He resigned his position in protest. Joy Gordan documents the US administrations absence of empathy for the residents of Iraq; putting pressure Saddam regardless of the consequences for the civilians was the preoccupation.

Speakers: Hans von Sponeck, Joy Gordon, Intro Professor Gibson.
