Unworthy Republic: The Dispossession of Native Americans
Historian Claudio Saunt joins the program for the hour to discuss the mass expulsion of American Indians from the southern US, an event that would later be remembered as the “trail of tears.” Prof. Saunt’s 2020 book “Unworthy Republic,” examines this episode in history, including the political manuvering by President Andrew Jackson to push the Indian Removal Act through Congress.
This program was recorded at an online discussion for KPFA-FM in April 2021; the event was hosted by Mickey Huff.
Claudio Saunt teaches history at the University of Georgia.
His book, “Unworthy Republic,” the subject of today’s show, has won numerous awards, including the Bancroft Prize.
