NIXON, Nev. (News 4 and FOX 11) — The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe will begin screening all traffic entering tribal lands near Nixon and Sutcliffe beginning Friday afternoon to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Under permit with the Nevada Department of Transportation, the Tribe will screen all traffic at the intersection of SR-446 and SR 447 south of Nixon and at mile marker 28 on SR-445 south of Sutcliffe.

Local tribal and non-local tribal traffic with proof of residency will be allowed through the screening checkpoints. Anyone without proof of residency will be turned around.

NDOT said the Pyramid Lake Reservation has seen an increase in positive cases of COVID-19, despite efforts to prevent the spread. It has also seen an increase in recreational users from the outside communities and other states continue to visit Tribal land.

Under permit with the Nevada Department of Transportation, the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe will begin on May 8, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. to screen all traffic entering Pyramid Lake tribal lands at the following two locations: Intersection of State Routes 446 and 447 directly south of Nixon, and State Route 445, mile marker 28 south of Sutcliffe.

The Paiute Tribe had already instituted a curfew across tribal land on April 5. The curfew is still in place from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. for residents who live on the reservation.

People who violate the curfew could be fined $100.

PS This is on the way to Gerlach, Nevada in the Black Rock Desert where they hold the Burning Man event around Labor Day (not happening this year). There are two Indian Reservations Wadsworth & Nixon to pass through to get to The Black Rock Desert. There have been lots of campers coming out here in the desert to chill.
