He has made many presentations to Canadian parliamentary committees and has served as an expert witness on constitutional issues in several important legal cases in Canada and the United States. You seem to be speaking past each other a lot in this debate. From an analytical, positivist perspective, Felton is logical and correct. From a consciousness-based perspective you’re right.
I think two things Felton said explains precisely why it is impossible to talk to him about religion. The first was the you can not answer -why questions. Scientifically speaking this is accurate, and absolute truth is a scientific impossibility, or at least is supposed to be. Someone call NIST and tell them!
The second thing he said was that it is impossible to prove the existence of God. The obvious response to this is that absolute truth is impossible according to Felton himself, including absolute certainty regarding god’s existence or non-existence. Yet he is demanding of you the same thing he just stated is not achievable to the science he supports his other arguments with. The honest response to the question from a materialist would be agnosticism, not dismissal of a concept one may or may not understand.
Which is where I am. I am very interested in language, and like to know what words mean before I use them. And because I have almost never gotten the exact same definition of god from even two religious people, this is a word I have a tough time using. Clearly, no one knows who or what god is here, considering the wide variety of interpretations of the concept. Conceptually I am interested, but linguistically I am highly skeptical. I once read that all human disagreements, unless they are contrived, deliberate or malicious, can be resolved by proper definitions. And I firmly believe this to be true.
PS: Regarding the etymology of words, this one is interesting:
Religion: res – thing (lat)
ligio – rope (lat)
Which things are being tied down with ropes? It is a very peculiar linguistic definition, and as far as I am concerned a good enough warning against organized religious activities of any sort. I am not a goat and I do not want to be tied down along with the other, um, things.
