“Nobody Told Me” is a John Lennon song, featured as the first single released from John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s Milk and Honey album in 1984. The song was originally written for Ringo Starr to include on his Stop and Smell the Roses album, but Lennon died before the song could be used. “Nobody Told Me” was Lennon’s last single to reach the top ten on Billboard magazine’s Hot 100, peaking at #5.

The question seemed sort of silly to a teenage Shana Morrison: “Are you gonna be a singer just like your mom and dad? What kid wants to be just like their mom and dad? That’s the last thing I wanted to do.”

That curiosity and those assumptions seemed natural.

Shana’s dad is Van Morrison, one of the most revered and influential singer-songwriters of the rock-and-roll era. Her mom is Janet “Planet” Rigsbee, who became an idealized representation of the peace-and-love generation when she married Morrison.

“I was exposed to it my whole life,” said Shana, whose versatile voice expresses everything from folk to soul and jazz. Just like dad. “It kind of came naturally. At first, I didn’t like it. I’d seen all sides: the good, the bad and the ugly.”

Turns out, Shana belatedly changed sides – and her tune – at 24.

Now an established soul-blues singer, Morrison, 41, still sounded star-struck about Saturday night. She opens for Don Henley, a founding member of the Eagles, in the final 2011 concert at Ironstone Amphitheatre in Murphys.

“Oh, yeah,” she said of Henley, 64, like her dad a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. “I’m so excited. I can’t believe it. I grew up with the Eagles. ‘The Long Run’ album was huge. (He wrote some) of the most romantic songs ever. I’m excited just to see him live. I’d never seen him.”

Her dad, the “bard” of Belfast, Northern Ireland, crafted some of the era’s most memorable songs and albums: from “Gloria” to “Brown Eyed Girl” “Astral Weeks,” “Moondance,” “Tupelo Honey” and “Into the Music.”

He never prodded her into that music.

“I saw that musicians had major problems,” Morrison said. “Doing all that work for, maybe, some pay day some time way, way, way in the future. Who’d wanna do that?”

So, she studied business at Pepperdine University. Then what? She wasn’t sure. Until dad, now 66, asked her to be a “guest” on a 1994 traveling revue he’d put together. It helped that Belfast singer Brian Kennedy, a longtime friend of Shana’s, was part of the production.

“It was a three-hour show,” said Morrison, who’d only sung in school choruses prior to that. “I did that for a year and got the performance bug. I really enjoyed it. It felt comfortable and natural.”

Since that debut, the Mill Valley resident has built a loyal following in clubs and at festivals, sung on two of her dad’s albums, toured and performed with him and released five CDs of her own – including 2010′s “Joyride,” on her Belfast Violet Records. The label’s named after Shana’s paternal grandmother. Her grandparents played a key role in her early music education.

Born in Kingston, N.Y., while her parents were living in Woodstock, Shana moved with them to Marin County, splitting time at their homes after they divorced when she was 3. She was more interested in ballet and gymnastics.

At 7, she “made change” for customers in her grandparents’ Fairfax record shop: “I listened to records all day, every day. I didn’t get paid. At the end of the day, I would get to pick a record.”

While she and her friends were into Led Zeppelin and AC/DC, her grandfather, George, would insist, ” ‘No, no, no, no. That’s not music,’ ” Morrison said.

So her pay-day selections – tracking with many of her dad’s influences – turned to blues, jazz and country: Ray Charles, John Lee Hooker, Sonny Terry and “Brownie” McGhee, Mose Allison and, “every now and then, I’d sneak in Rickie Lee Jones or Steely Dan. That’s jazz, right? It’s great to have that knowledge in its raw form.”

At 13, she moved to North Hollywood with her mother – a musician, writer and crafter of Love Beads by Janet Planet. She sat in high-school classes “being bored and writing songs,” Morrison said. “My mom had a studio. My bedroom shared a wall with it. All the songs she was writing maybe seeped through the wall.

“I’ve always written songs for my family and friends. I got a sense of accomplishment and completeness from writing songs. Making something out of nothing.”

After “considering” law school, she made her business degree into a brief career as a paralegal: “I couldn’t think of sitting at a desk 10 hours reading small print.”

Then dad called about his roving R&B revue.

“It was an incredible education,” Morrison said. “Anyone who’s worked for dad gets to be really, really good. The learning curve is steep. There’s a very high level of musicianship. It’s outstanding every night. It’s dynamic. Exciting. It raises your level by leaps and bounds.”

Unlike her dad – who’s issued 48 albums in a 50-year career – Morrison hasn’t dealt with corporate conniving and corruption or artistic pressures fixated on pure profit.

When “tempted to get a real adult job and real adult life,” Morrison said, people “ask if I’m gonna release a CD. I kinda just play when there’s demand for a CD. Then make a CD. Instead of the other way around.”

Lets hope so. Here humanity is finding its voice, waking up and saying no more.

To me this feels like the real thing, the big deal – a time for change has arrived.

Occupy the street. They are your streets. Be peaceful. Support humanity and the movement for change.

I fall in again.
I can’t believe I am in the same place.

It still takes a long time to get out.

Chapter 3

I walk down the same street.
