Brent is the president emeritus of the Friends of the Earth and Antonia is the director of the Energy Program at Global Exchange, a San Francisco-based human rights non-profit organization.

A Fukushima-like hydrogen explosion could happen at the Hanford Nuclear Waste facilities, that’s according to whistleblower Walt Tamosaitis. The Hanford site in Washington State is home to two-thirds of the nation’s high-level radioactive waste. Joining Earthbeat host Daphne Wysham to discuss Walt’s case – and his being fired for speaking out – is Tom Devine, part of Walt’s legal team and the legal director for the Government Accountability Project.

Oil companies like Chevron work with the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal and other newspapers to place their advertisements directly opposite the paper’s environmental reporting. Radioactive fallout from Japan’s damaged Fukushima nuclear reactor has been detected in milk in Vermont and water in U.S. cities.

Joining host Daphne Wysham to discuss the contamination and why it is that the US Food and Drug Administration and the US Environmental Protection Agency are giving conflicting and confusing advice on “safe” levels of exposure to radiation is Dr. Jeff Patterson, the past president of the Physicians for Social Responsibility and Carl Grossman, a prolific writer on nuclear power and professor of journalism at the State University of New York – College at Old Westbury.

The EPA remains a target of budget cuts by some members of Congress. Kieran Suckling says the recent fight was only the first skirmish in what will be a longer war against the agency. Kieran is the executive director of the Center for Biological Diversity.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has changed the Fukushima disaster to a 7, on a par with the Chernobyl nuclear meltdown 25 years ago. Philip White in Japan provides us with an update. Philip is the International Liaison Officer at the Citizen’s Nuclear Information Center. And Jim Riccio, Greenpeace’s nuclear policy expert, discusses Greenpeace’s role in monitoring radiation in Japan, and why they the IAEA has been slow to state the obvious.

EARTHBEAT — Earthbeat:US Nuclear Safety Called into Question, Oil Spill Effects Continue in the Gulf and the EPA’s New Mercury Rules

Spent fuel rods have come into focus as a result of the partial meltdown in Fukushima, Japan. Yet the same problem of unsafe quantities of spent fuel exists, stored at nuclear power plants, with even greater quantities of spent fuel in the US, according to Bob Alvarez, a senior scholar at the Institute for Policy Studies – yet, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has ignored warnings on this problem. We hear from Alvarez on this issue, and we hear from Jeffrey Patterson of Physicians for Social Responsibility, who claims there is no safe level of radiation, and that it is only a matter of time before an accident similar to Fukushima’s happens in the US unless we act swiftly.

Then we hear from BBC investigative journalist Greg Palast who reveals that the same company that has allegedly covered up safety problems in the partial meltdowns of nuclear power plants in Japan – Tokyo Electric Power – is planning on helping to build two nuclear power plants in Texas, with financial backing from the Obama administration.

Earthbeat host Daphne Wysham moderated a debate over America’s nuclear industry between Arjun Makhijani, the president of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research, and Eileen Supko, a vice president of Energy Resources International, a nuclear fuel consulting company in Washington, DC.

The US Coast Guard is investigating reports of new oil slicks in the Gulf of Mexico from a spill about 30 miles offshore. For many Gulf residents, reports of a new spill just adds to the astounding amount of oil and toxic dispersants they’re still living with from the massive BP oil disaster nearly one year ago. Rocky Kistner just returned from the Gulf and joins us to discuss the new spill and health concerns of residents along the Gulf. Rocky is a communications associate with the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Finally, some good news, for the first time, the EPA is setting a national standard for mercury and other air pollution from power plants. Mercury and other air toxics like arsenic, chromium, nickel and acid gases cause as many as 17,000 premature deaths each year and they’re likely the source for 120,000 cases of childhood asthma, says the EPA. Gabe Wisniewski, Greenpeace’s coal campaign director, joins us to discuss the new rules.

On Friday, March 18, 2011, several prominent nuclear experts gave a press briefing at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. They discussed openly and frankly concerns about the Japanese Nuclear disaster and what its implications are for the US nuclear industry.

Peter Bradford: “This accident left Three Mile Island in the mirror several days ago”
(he gives a review of the regulatory events during and following the Three Mile Island accident). “There isn’t a family in America that has been looking at its TV screens in the last week and (is saying now is the time to take on) 100, 200, 300 thousand dollars worth of exposure to the risk of costs in new nuclear plants, forget the health and safety aspects.”

Bob Alvarez: “This is not a problem that is a surprise. In 2003 my colleagues and me produced a report that warned the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission that if water were to drain.” “Unlike the Japanese reactors, in the United States the spent (fuel is stored in places that are) … four times than their design intended. Corporations are using the panic and disorientation of budget crises to crush unions and environmental protections, that’s according to Shock Doctrine author Naomi Klein. In a conversation with host Daphne Wysham, Klein tells us how those in Wisconsin and other places are pushing back to catch corporate tax dodgers.

US Uncut actions are occurring across America.

The federal government must pass a budget within days – or all government services will screech to a halt. But Republicans in the US House passed a budget bill that strips the EPA of its power. Anna Aurilio, the DC director of Environment America, says the shortfalls could be filled by stopping the ‘free pass’ oil companies get on deep-water drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. They’re not paying $5 billion dollars a year on these oil leases.

Climate activist Tim DeChristopher faces federal felony charges for interrupting a federal auction of oil and gas leases – and auction held in the last few days of the Bush Administration in 2008. We’ll hear from Tim was ‘bidder number 70? – and managed to ‘win’ a number of the leases before the auction was halted. We hear from Tim via the website Solve Climate.

EARTHBEAT — Wikileaks – Saudi Oil Reserves May Be Vastly Overstated, Koch Brothers Push for Tar Sands Pipeline & Saving Social Security with a Carbon Tax

Wikileaks documents show that a top Saudi Arabian geologist told US diplomats that Saudis were overestimating the country’s oil reserves by as much as 40 percent. These cables were discovered by the environmental reporter for The Guardian – John Vidal. John joins Earthbeat host Daphne Wysham to discuss these cables, the geologist’s attempts to retract or at least re-frame his comments, and what the whole affairs means for world oil prices and peak oil.

The Koch Brothers have made billions in the oil industry and it’s been uncovered that they plan to spend millions to defeat President Obama in the upcoming election – and yet they’re pushing the Obama Administration to approve a massive new pipeline that would bring oil from Canadian tar sands down to Texas refineries. Joe Smyth of Greenpeace joins us to discuss the Keystone Pipeline and the Koch Brother’s deep pockets and political maneuvers.

Elaine Kamarck is with the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. She says that one way we could finance climate action is by having a carbon tax, and put the proceeds toward shoring up social security.

EARTHBEAT — Shadowy White House Office Silences Gov’t Scientists; China’s Carbon Capture Plans & Palm Oil Plantations Destroy Indonesia’s Rainforests

This week the Environmental Protection Agency announced that – despite a White House directive – the EPA will not be changing its current standards for answering media questions about its research.

On December of last year, 2010, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy issued a memo directing all agencies, including the EPA, to develop and implement policies clarifying agency scientists’ right to speak and publish their work, talk to the media, and be free of any political alteration of scientific documents.

But in reality, many say far too little has changed since the repressive Bush Administration, and they charge that the White House memo was weakened by the White House Office of Management and Budget. Washington, DC based freelance writer, Joseph A Davis, has covered the OMB and its power plays to control federal agencies for over 30 years. When Chinese President Hu Jintao wrapped up his United States visit he returned to China with a historic agreement to focus on clean energy. But part of the plan is ‘carbon capture and storage’ a scheme in which carbon is captured from industrial sources like coal-fired power plants and then stored by injecting it deep into the Earth.

According to Peter Montague, the executive director for the Environmental Research Foundation, carbon capture and storage is an expensive waste of time and money that will extend our use of fossil fuels. Also joining us is Sarah Forbes, a senior associate for climate and energy at World Resource Institute, the organization that is working with China and the US to ensure that CCS, if to happens, is done safely and effectively.

The relatively small island nation of Indonesia is one of the world’s top producers of greenhouse gases. What puts this Southeast Asian country right in there with the United States and China is the deforestation. One of the biggest threats to the Indonesian rainforest are palm oil plantations. Joining Earthbeat host Daphne Wysham to discuss international funding for these plantations is Marcus Colchester, director of the Forest Peoples Program.

Andrew is the Dot Earth blogger for the New York Times and a senior fellow for environmental understanding at Pace University.

A new strategy is catching on that gives communities the right to kick corporations out of their communities, while granting ecosystems “rights”. Mari Margil is the associate director of the group that’s spearheading this effort – Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund.

Then, a new book explores the why it is that one in three children is chronically ill. Host Daphne Wysham speaks to Alice Shabecoff about her book Poisoned for Profit. Alice is the former national director for the National Consumers League. Her co-author on “Poisoned for Profit” is Philip Shabecoff, a former environmental reporter for the New York Times and the founder of Greenwire.

EARTHBEAT — Cancun Conundrums and Canadians Undercut US Climate Laws

Documents have come to light that show that Canadian diplomats have been working in DC to try to kill or limit laws that enact clean fuels standards that would restrict the sale of oil from dirty Canadian tar sands flowing into the US. The diplomats quietly asked companies like Exxon Mobil and BP to help them crush clean energy reforms. Joining us in our Washington, DC studios is Danielle Droitsch, the US Policy Director for the environmental think-tank Pembina who discusses the disturbing attempts by these diplomats to “debunk” the toxic effects of tar sands exploration on First Nations peoples.

And, in what’s been called a major breakthrough – over 400 companies around the world have agreed to start using climate-friendly refrigeration techniques. Amy Larkin, Greenpeace’s Solutions Director, helped to put together the agreement that will cut the amount of climate-killing HFCs released into our atmosphere.

Then we hear from representatives who joined nearly 200 nations gathered in Cancun, Mexico this week for the next round of United Nations-sponsored climate negotiations. Joining host Daphne Wysham from the meeting are Ann Peterman, the executive director of the Global Justice Ecology Project to discuss the UN plans for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) and its effects on indigenous peoples. Janet Redman of the Institute for Policy Studies and Kristen Hite, an attorney for the Climate Change Program at the Center for International Environmental Law also join us to discuss climate finance and REDD.

A recent lawsuit filed on behalf of Ecuador essentially sues the oil company BP on behalf of Mother Nature for the disaster that occurred this summer along America’s Gulf Coast. Nnimmo Bassey of the Friends of the Earth International joins us from Cancun to discuss the meeting the intent of the lawsuit.

In 2008, a University of Utah economics student created chaos when he took part in an auction of oil and gas drilling leases in the state. Tim De Christopher bid up parcels of land by hundreds of thousands of dollars – ultimately halting the auction. Tim won the bidding on 13 parcels and drove up the prices on several other pieces of land. Before the bogus bids were discovered, the thousands of acres of oil and gas leases were purchased for $7-point-2 (M) million dollars. Of course Tim did not have the money to pay for his bids – and never had the intention paying. His goal, which he achieved, was to disrupt the entire process. Earthbeat host Daphne Wysham interviewed Tim De Christopher while attending the “Pricing Carbon Conference” held at Wesleyan University. We spoke about the auction and his pending criminal charges, as well as his new target – America’s Tar Sands.

South Carolina Representative Bob Inglis was one of the many legislators replaced by upstart candidates during the 2010 Midterm Election. But what sets Inglis apart is that he’s one of the few Republicans who support action against climate change. Daphne met up with Bob at the recent “Pricing Carbon Conference” – and asked him about his being the rare Republican who supports action on climate change.

Oil is now washing up all along the Gulf Coast as a result of the disaster of an open, gushing BP oil well in the Gulf of Mexico.

Joining host Daphne Wysham with a first hand account of the ongoing disaster is Bob Deans, the director of federal communications for the Natural Resources Defense Council. Joining the conversation with a view on what’s occurring on Capitol Hill and the Obama Administration’s plans to continue offshore oil drilling is Kyle Ash, the senior legislative representative for Greenpeace.

Investigative reporter Mark Schapiro joins us to discuss his investigation on how forests in Brazil are becoming a commodity on the worldwide ‘carbon market.’ Mark is a senior correspondent for the Center for Investigative Reporting – and his series on the carbon market is for Frontline World.

Carbon Nation is a new feature film about the current revolution of entrepreneurs across America who are focusing on clean, renewable energy. We speak to filmmaker Peter Byck about his documentary in which some of these ‘climate pioneers’ don’t even believe that climate change is occurring. Or as one of Byck’s subjects puts it, “even if you’re a greedy bastard and you just want cheap power, you’d still do these things.”

Tyson Slocum, the energy director of the group Public Citizen, joins to to review BP’s long history of ignoring safety concerns and fighting government fines. And former oil broker and industry critic Chuck Hamel gives us an insider’s view of BP’s corporate culture – including the company’s encouraging workers to falsify safety statements. Hamel is on the board of POGO – the Project on Government Oversight.

Then, readings by acclaimed indigenous poet Allison Hedge Coke. Her books “Off-Season City Pipe” and “Dog Road Woman” involve autobiographical poems drawing on Allison’s background as a Native American, a tobacco sharecropper and factory worker. The People’s Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth was a three-day conference that took place in Cochabamba, Bolivia and focused on giving a voice to indigenous people, environmental justice activists and others locked out of the United Nations’ previous Copenhagen Climate Conference.

Host Daphne Wysham’s reporting from Bolivia includes a conversation with Beverly Keene, the international coordinator of Jubilee South, a network of organizations that work on debt and development.

Plus, a discussion of how the world’s governments are giving cash and carbon credits for ending illegal activity – gas flaring – under the UN ‘clean development mechanism.’ Wysham speaks to Nnimmo Bassey, Nigeria’s executive director of Environmental Right Action / Friends of the Earth about these open air flames burning off natural gas and his impressions of the Bolivia conference.

Clayton Thomas Muller is a longstanding champion for environmental justice. He’s a member of the Cree Nation in Canada and he heads the Indigenous Environmental Network’s project on Tar Sands project. Adding insult to injury, residents all along the Gulf Coast are now having to gut their houses because they were rebuilt after Hurricanes Rita and Katrina with toxic drywall. The Chinese-made drywall releases gases so noxious it’s corroding pipes and electrical wiring. Jim Vallette of the Healthy Building Network’s Pharos Project joins us to explain how the drywall came to include toxic ash and other wastes left over from coal-fired power plants – and the connections between the German multi-national corporation Knauf and its manufacturing plants in China. The Health Building Network’s Pharos Project connects builders with sustainable materials.

The World Bank approved a loan that will create one of the world’s largest coal-fired power plants. The $3.75 billion dollar loan will result in a power plant that emits 23 million metric tons of carbon dioxide each year. Desmond D’Sa of the Environmental Alliance of South Africa talks about how this loan will perpetuate many of the conditions in place under apartheid.

A new film tracks the history and the legacy of Earth Day. Host Daphne Wysham speaks to filmmaker Robert Stone. The film will air on PBS’s program ‘American Experience’ on April 19th.

Caroline is the president of the native village of Point Hope on Alaskas North Slope. Their native hunting waters are directly affected by President Obamas lifting of the offshore drilling ban.

For the first time, the federal Clean Air Act has been used to control carbon dioxide and other global warming pollutants. The new tailpipe rules for Americas cars require new vehicles to get 35-point-5 miles per gallon by the year 2016. But as our guest Vera Pardee explains, these new standards dont go far enough. Pardee is a senior attorney with the Center for Biological Diversity.

He’s just been released from jail in West Virginia for his nonviolent work against mountaintop removal mining with Climate Ground Zero.

James Cameron’s 3-D blockbuster movie Avatar is on track to become one of the most watched movies around the world – and that’s allowed many to look at the movie as a way of illustrating the current struggles of indigenous peoples around the world. Sanho Tree of the Institute of Policy Studies and Clayton Thomas Muller, a member of the Cree Nation and the Indigenous Environmental Network, join the conversation. Muller joins us from Canada – where the battle over oil-rich tar sands on native lands mirrors the movie’s plot.

The discovery of methane being released in Siberia leaves many scientists concerned that we’ve entered a positive feedback loop of global warming. The National Science Foundation says the methane release is a result of climate change. Host Daphne Wysham gets to the core of the issue with University of Chicago climate scientist Dave Archer.

Washington Senator Maria Cantwell introduced a bill seeking to plug some of the problems with carbon cap and trade. The Friends of the Earth’s Erich Pica stays in our studios to discuss the bill with David Bookbinder, the senior climate counsel for the Sierra Club.

Then a conversation about the largest World Bank loan ever to Africa – for building two new coal-fired power plants. We speak to Sunita Dubey of the U.S. offices of the South African environmental justice group Groundwork.

The United Nations climate conference in Copenhagen, Denmark is underway.

Joining host Mike Tidwell to discuss what’s occurring during the official meeting is author and climate activist Bill McKibben, the founder of 350.org. And from the floor of the Copenhagen talks themselves is Jennifer Morgan, the director of the World Resources Institute’s Climate and Energy Program.

Peter Barnes joins us to discuss his views of the current status of climate action. Peter is is with the social justice group On the Commons based in San Francisco. He’s also the author of the book Who Owns the Sky? and a supporter of a cap and dividend way of combating climate change.

Then, we get a view of what’s occurring outside the official U.N. Climate meeting from George Marshall, the founder of the Climate Outreach and Information Network from Wales, UK and from the Copenhagen meeting itself is Jihan Gearon of the Indigenous Environmental Network.

Host Daphne Wysham speaks to the Tony Janetos, the co-author of an effort that brings together 13 US government agencies, laboratories and universities to create a comprehensive report on climate change in America. Janetos is the director of the Joint Global Change Research Institute at the University of Maryland and the Pacific Northwest National Lab. The USA’s first major climate legislation is poised to come to a vote in Congress this week, joining us to discuss the bill and review how it will affect the upcoming Copenhagen climate talks is Erich Pica, policy analyst for the Friends of the Earth; Gillian Caldwell, campaign director for 1Sky; and Devin Helfrich, the legislative advocate for the Friends Committee on National Legislation. Part of the wrangling over the bill is intense lobbying by big agriculture companies as they push their way into the trillion dollar carbon market. Stanford Law professor Michael Wara joins us to discuss their efforts. Wara is also a member of the program for Energy and Sustainable Development at Stanford University. Then, the legal precedent set by oil giant Shell’s decision to pay out over $15 million dollars to settle a thirteen-year case filed by the family of the slain Nigerian writer and activist Ken Saro-Wiaw. We speak to Nigerian human rights lawyer, Oronto Douglas and the executive director of the group Oil Change International, Steve Kretzmann.

Forced migration is an idea being floated by conservation biologists that would move plants and animals to new locations to protect them from extinction due to climate change. Professor Jessica Hellmann of the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Indiana.

The world’s largest wind company is headquartered in a tiny country not know for being windy. We’ll hear from Roby Roberts of the wind turbine manufacturer Vestas.

The Nigerian military’s Joint Task Force launched a full-scale assault on villages in the oil-rich Niger Delta on May 13, 2009. reports from the ground suggest they killed many innocent civilians. The military says the action is targeted at militants in the area. Humanitarian aid groups and journalists are banned from entering the Delta. Billions of dollars in oil is extracted from under the feet of the people in the Niger Delta, and yet the region is marked by abject poverty.

New legislation that could cap carbon dioxide emissions and put cash in the hands of every man, woman, and child in America. Cap-and-Cash heads to Congress. We hear from the author of the Cap and Dividend Act of 2009, Congressman Chris Van Hollen, a democrat representing Maryland’s Eighth District, and from Michael Noble, the executive director of Fresh Energy, an energy policy organization in Minneapolis – St. Paul. ‘Black carbon’ makes up 50 percent of the non-carbon dioxide global warming pollution in our atmosphere.
