EPISODE BREAKDOWN: On this episode of Breaking the Set, Abby Martin remarks on the Supreme Court’s decision on the landmark case McCutcheon v FEC, which abolished aggregate individual contributions to political candidates, parties, and super PACs. Abby then discusses GM’s multi-million car recall, after the company knew about a deadly ignition system defect which resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, as well as the government’s severe lack of oversight of a company that taxpayers paid billions of dollars to bail out. Abby then speaks with Suha Najjar, a student at the University of Michigan, about her organization’s campaign to urge the school to divest from companies associated with Israeli occupation in Palestine. Abby then goes over the anniversary of the US withdrawal from Vietnam, highlighting the unlearned lessons from the war and draws a parallel to America’s recent conflicts, namely Iraq and Afghanistan. BTS wraps up the show with an interview with Steve Horn of desmogblog.com about the recent BP oil spill in Indiana, which resulted in over a thousand gallons of oil poured into Lake Michigan, a source of drinking water for millions of people.
