EPISODE BREAKDOWN: On this episode of Breaking the Set, Abby Martin discusses the decision to seek the death penalty for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, one of the alleged Boston Marathon bombers, despite the unethical nature of the death penalty and the fact that capital punishment is illegal in Massachusetts. Abby then highlights a new Snowden leak showing that the Canadian spy agency, CSEC, tracked travelers through airport Wi-Fi hotspots, monitoring them long after they left the airport and what this new document shows about the shady surveillance agreement between the five countries known as ‘The Five Eyes’. Abby then speak with BTS producer Manuel Rapalo about some of the top characteristics of a liar, including body language and verbal signals, using past presidents as prime examples. Abby then calls out Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers for her dumbed down State of the Union response and her hypocrisy concerning equal pay for women, while applauding Seattle City Council member Kshama Sawant, one of the only socialist public officials to ever be elected, for her biting and truthful state of the union response. BTS wraps up the show with an interview with Craig Becker, general counsel with the AFL-CIO about a landmark Supreme Court case, Harris v. Mcquinn, which could potentially set back labor unions for decades.
