North Korean Rocket Shoot Down?

Woo hoo! We shot down another North Korean rocket!

Well, probably, IMO.

We’ve had the technology since the late 80’s, demonstrated it many times, and even made it public.

A fairly low power airborne laser can weaken a rocket’s fuel tanks enough to cause them to rupture. And no one will ever know whether it was a bad fuel tank or outside interference.

But the key is, the rocket must be lased during stage one or two, while it is still fairly slow. At least that was true during the 80’s, when tracking/aiming technology was more crude.

But now tracking a stage 3 missile is doable too. Hell, now we can track a rocket AND steer a missile to it in near real time. It’s been proven many times. And aiming a laser is MUCH easier.

And laser strength has increased by orders of magnitude since the 80’s.

But Bill Clinton killed the program in the mid 90’s, and most of the previously published info left the public domain. But I had some engineer friends “on the inside” at the time who told me that was all just propaganda. Yes, R&D was cut as part of the “Peace Dividend”. But once something is learned, built, and demonstrated, well, it can’t really die.

Bush revived active R&D, and there is enough public info available now to pique the imagination.

My wife and I were eating dinner when the news flash of the launch came up. I told her, “Let’s just wait about 15 minutes. I predict it will crash harmlessly into the sea.”

I don’t have anyone on the inside anymore. But I’m sure we know how to time these things now so that we can break them up at will.
