Chalmers Johnson — Nemesis: The Last Days of the American Republic

Chalmers Johnson died in Nov, 2010, after a full and amazing life as author, professor, historian and scholar on Asia’s political economy. This recording contains many of his most important ideas. Johnson said that the U.S. is on the verge of internal collapse, due in large part to the vast expenditures required to maintain its ever-expanding empire.

Chalmers Johnson said that nothing is more dangerous to democracy than military expansion and war: “The political system of the United States, history tells us, is one of the most unstable combination there is – that is domestic democracy and foreign empire – the choices are stark. A nation can be one or the other, a democracy or an imperialist, but it can’t be both.” Johnson is the acclaimed author of Blowback, The Sorrows of Empire and Nemesis. He was a former analyst for the CIA and professor emeritus of the University of California San Diego. He was interviewed by the California based author of “Imperial San Francisco”, Gray Brechin, at an event hosted by KPFA radio and Global Exchange in March 2007. From a TUC Radio Presentation.
