History professor and author, Dongping Han, talks about his life growing up during the Cultural Revolution in China. Discussion of the importance of work; the educational system in Mao’s China; the recent riots in Xinjiang Province between ethnic minority Uighurs and Han Chinese; the famine during the Great Leap Forward; the writings of Mao; essential elements of a successful social revolution. This presentation was part of the Rediscovering China’s Cultural Revolution symposium at the University of California at Berkeley sponsored by Revolution Books and Monthly Review Press.
